New Style

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

At Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we are always on the lookout for new places to find fashion inspiration, from celebrity style to editorials to street style blogs. So it makes perfect sense that when we find a trend that we’re dying to try, we look to some famous fashionistas to show us how it’s done. This month, we’re featuring the high waisted skirt, the perfect piece for the girl who loves a mini.
Style Tips: The High Waisted Skirt
STYLE TIP #1 / Pair your high waisted skirt with a loose, sheer tee and an oversized buckle belt.
We love almost anything that the Olsen twins wear so it is no surprise to us that Ashley Olsen is first up in this month’s Style Tips. Ashley pairs a flared, high waisted skirt with a loose white tee thrown over a black bra. A thick belt takes it from simple to chic while her clutch adds a pop of color. We suggest pairing your black mini with this byCORPUS Zip Tee ($38) and Bebe’s Zipper Studded Corset Belt ($39).
STYLE TIP #2 / Mix a bohemian print skirt with fringe details and a long necklace.
Vanessa Hudgens knows how to bring a fresh, modern take to boho chic. Here she pairs a bright, printed skirt with a fringed bag and a long pendant necklace. Loose, wavy hair adds a hippy element to the look while her aviator sunglasses give it some 70s appeal. For a similar look, combine Kimchi Blue’s Printed Cascade Skirt ($48) with Antik Batik’s Kassi Cross Body Bag ($325).
STYLE TIP #3 / Go classic with a button up shirt and a Chanel bag.
Although we only just finished perusing Alexa Chung’s style (see It Girl: Alexa Chung), we love her chic take on this trend too much to dismiss it. Although this look immediately appears to be classic and understated, small elements like stud detail on her shirt collar and messy hair add an edge. We think Free People’s Studded Button Front Shirt ($98) makes for a fashionable fill-in. As for the bag, if you can afford the real thing, that’s great! Otherwise, opt for Topshop’s Quilted Chain Strap Bag ($65).
STYLE TIP #4 / Mix a quirky print with a studded belt for added impact.
If anyone knows how to work a trend, it’s Lauren Conrad, who always has one eye on the fashion pulse while still adding her own unique touch. Here she mixes a plain black skirt with a quirky, polka dot print top. Adding a studded belt gives her look an extra edge and tones down the loose, hippy-inspired hair. We like this The Lady & The Sailor Tank ($65) paired with Hyde Collection’s Pyramid Stud Belt($78).
STYLE TIP #5 / Wear an extra tight skirt with layers of chunky beads.
There are many ways to do the high waisted skirt look, from a loose, bubble shape to a skintight mini. Here, Shenae Grimes opts for a subtle but sexy tight denim skirt, but tones it down by wearing chunky beads and a nondescript tank. Try Topshop’s Denim Quilted Bodycon Skirt ($55) with a white tank andCroft & Barrow’s Silver-Tone Beaded Necklace ($10.72, on sale).
STYLE TIP #6 / Show off oversized pockets with a colorful cardigan and lace up boots.
Our final Style Tip comes from Peaches Geldof, a girl who knows how to work the high waisted look to her advantage. The oversized pockets add a new component to the mix, while her lace up boots and colorful cardigan add the grunge factor. This Slouchy Swing Denim Skirt ($70) will give you the oversized pocket-factor, while Jeffrey Campbell’s All Lace Up Combat Boots ($220) and BDG’s Solid Cardigan Sweater ($38) will complete the look.
